We Love Green!

Few people visit this blog anymore, and hardly. I guess we've just moved on; group blogs rarely survive beyond two batches, unless there's no other choice of reusing the same blog. Subconsciously, after surfing all websites of interest, I'll shift my mouse over to the rarely-click link of this blog. It's like seeing a medal which you won during primary school; you know you competed in that match and won, but the exact details of it remain fuzzy, like how much you've trained for it, and even the actual event seems to be a silhouette from the past. With a shrug, you put that dusty medal back into the cabinet; the next time you see it may be years later.

I really wonder what happened to that Snakes & Ladders mat, that miniature model of the Green Family, and even more curious on what happened to their makers and friends. It seems we've all moved on, but in which direction? How, where and when?

Should there even be an answer? I think not, because I want to preserve the memories of then and there. What happens later may not be as important as what has happened. More importantly, at least the refusal to know 'what happens later' allows one to harbour hopes, dreams and wishes built on that brief moments of time, to hanker after a possibility...A rosy union which is impossible after knowing 'what happens later'.

let me just post up an AWESOME greenlink promotional video that A LOT of orientation ppl and OGLs commented was GREAT. (i mean it .... hehe)

I wonder, if you have ever wondered like me, why are we collecting can tabs to save a couple of legless, unnamed elephants in Thailand? Apart from helping Grant, who must be appeased from time to time, why are we helping them, while we could be spending our time and effort on something else? What if one day, a stranger goes up to you and declares, "You are wasting your time collecting can tabs for elephants! Chiang Mai is so faraway! You should be doing something practical for disabled people, who definitely need more help!"

Echoes of this have been ringing in my ears for the past year. I can hear it coming from my close friends as well as my mom. And sometimes I do hesitate, what is the point of caring about elephants, while I can spend time raising funds for this disabled charity or that? Or like Pei Yee, volunteering at MINDS - surely helping the intellectually disabled is worth more than the leg of an unknown elephant, whom we shall never meet in our lifetime?

This stranger whom you have just met has a few basic assumptions. One, locality matters in measuring the worth of actions. Two, human beings are superior than elephants, or animals in general, that's why we should help them more instead of elephants.

On the first point, it is easy to refute. Locality does not matter since the sum of human utility in the world is equal to the maximum welfare of mankind. Contributing to local charities rather than overseas charities is still considered raising the utility of people, and vice versa. People seem to believe that by helping people close to us, we benefit more than by helping people further from us. Strictly speaking, according to the utilitarian view, it does not matter since we are still maximising the welfare of mankind.

For the second point, however, we have to consider if human beings and animals are equal. You may immediately begin by thinking, that all lives should be treated equal. This is precisely the Buddhist view that all beings in the world are reincarnated - a man might become a cockroach in the next life and vice versa, therefore the 'soul' is permanent. Hence the lives of human beings and animals should be given equal weight.

Apparently this stranger still thinks humans are superior than animals, so it's more rewarding to help ourselves instead of elephants. For this assumption, I must invite philosopher Peter Singer (he is alive, by the way, not all philosophers are dead) to argue his case. He claims that people are guilty of 'speciesism' - we discriminate against animals, just as racists discriminate against other races.

The typical arguments racists use to justify their causes are that other races have lower intellect, less strong or maybe even less human, therefore it is right to discriminate them to protect their status. Sexists can claim women do not have the right ability for some jobs, so based on differences in ability, they discriminate women. Similarly, 'speciesists' see great differences between people and animals, so we discriminate against them by exploitation, through the easy act of eating them and vivisection.

Races and sexes are increasingly equal, because people have come to realise that though there may be fundamental differences between men and women, or genetic differences between different races resulting in different abilities, the fact is that the claim to equality is NOT based on eliminating these differences at all. We understand that men and women have different abilities in performing a job, yet we give them equal opportunities in trying for it, because equality is a moral ideal, a principle which we accord greater respect as our society progresses.

There may be differences between an elephant and a human, but even by eliminating these differences, they can still be unequal. This is because both have different capacities for pleasure and pain. And I adhere to the principle of equality by treating both equally.

When I mention different capacities for pleasure and pain, this is important for us to understand why we are helping the elephants. Can a mentally retarded person enjoy more than a mother elephant? We have no certain way of knowing, and one suspects the answer tends towards a 'nil'. Peter Singer continues to argue that since animals have the capacity for pleasure and pain, then they have interests in the world, which should be protected similarly to raising the utility of disabled people.

Therefore by giving disabled elephants prosthetic legs, we are protecting their interests and maximising the welfare of all life on this planet. There is no difference between helping elephants and disabled people. Some can choose to ignore the pain elephants are suffering, and even if they see them enduring it, they may not feel it themselves. Yet this is still no argument that animal lives are worth less than human lives. This highlights instead that we are not fully maximising the welfare of all beings in the world.

This may seem a long answer to the stranger. But I'm trying to tell you, us, that because elephants are treated equally as we treat one another, then there is justification for sending tonnes of can tabs to Thailand. By minimising their pain, we protect their interests. By doing so we raise their utility and all of us benefit from greater welfare. I cannot convert this into monetary terms, since I've just failed Maths, but I can argue that this intangible welfare is what leads to John Stuart Mills (dead philosopher)'s 'Greatest Happiness Principle'. You do have to admit, elephants are cute and we enjoy seeing them with 4 legs instead of 3.

Keep on collecting those can tabs! You are doing in part for both mankind and elephant-kind! May the Force be with you.

a) Explain how recycling can be a source of market failure. (8m)

Market failure occurs when the price mechanism of the free market fails to allocate resources in an efficient and optimum manner. There are several sources of market failure such as imperfect competition, externalities and provision of public goods. Recycling slows down the pace which raw materials is used currently, and helps to conserve these raw materials for future generations. Therefore it provides a positive externality.

By collecting newspapers for recycling, Greenlink is engaging in the production of recycled goods. This is a positive externality as it provides an external benefit to third parties for whom no payment was made to the private consumer (i.e. students) and producer (Greenlink). This external benefit is captured in the Marginal External Benefit (MEB) as raw materials (paper) are conserved for usage by future generations. The more immediate benefit is less waste is produced, so that the landfill at Pulau Semakau can be sustained for a longer period of time. In addition, the reduction of waste will also result in less waste being incinerated, so smoke emissions will potentially be minimized. This will contribute to a better air quality in Singapore. Clearly third parties such as the average person benefit from this private production.

This MEB creates a divergence between Marginal Private Benefit (MPB) and Marginal Social Benefit (MSB). Assuming that Marginal Social Cost (MSC) = Marginal Private Cost (MPC), Greenlink will produce at the equilibrium point 1 where MPB meets MSC, as it fails to internalise this external benefit. However, the socially optimum level of production is actually at the equilibrium point 2 where MSB meets MSC. The quantity of recycling at equilibrium point 2 is greater than that at equilibrium point 1. Therefore there is under-production of recycling and this leads to an inefficient allocation of resources.

The benefits are greater than the costs incurred by shifting production from equilibrium point 1 to equilibrium point 2. As production is at the socially inefficient level of equilibrium point 1, the net benefit lost is considered the deadweight loss to society. Society’s welfare is not fully maximized. Hence as there is a lack of efficient and optimal allocation of resources by the price mechanism, market failure has occurred in the production of recycled goods. This justifies government intervention in the market.

Today is the first day of SGF! After school, me and charmaine went down to suntec convention centre.

Oh man!! When we entered the exhibition, it was like...WOW!!!WOW!!!AND ALOT MORE WOWS!!

Haha..bet u guys are jealous.All the gardens are superbly well furnished with plants and furnitures!! With all the lighting and colour effects, it is really really beautiful!!

Well, i started off the day with guiding a group of adults..haha very shibai la..coz i didn't revise notes. Nvm..learn from mistakes..go home mug for tmr..

Well..the day started off lousy but after that it was more relaxing..got to noe many Nparks staff and other volunteers!!=)))

Yesterday, yili was saying how she wondered whether we put in more effort than what we got out of greenlink. We came to the conclusion that, we learned so much from being in greenlink, and what we take away with us will last us throughout our lives. It more than makes up for all the sacrifices made.

Haha, what a way to begin... my past entries having been full of crap, I promise to make this a proper post this time :)

We learned a lot alright. I feel a sense of nostalgia...time to reminisce. This is going to be a long post, I think :)

I remember my first session in greenlink. I didn't come for the orientation as I had piano lesson every thursday ( I had to reschedule my lesson after that. And then I ended up having to put piano on hold until after A's because I simply couldn't cope with having to take my grade 8 exam on top of 2 ccas and studies :( But I can honestly say that I have no regrets joining 2 ccas which I loved :) ) I didn't have a clue what went on in greenlink. I thought it was just for appreciating nature and loving animals :) and then hongyi came towards me with a pair of muddy gloves on her outstretched hands and asked me to get the application form out from her bag because she was gardening. Haha, i was feeling perplexed as I filled out the form. And the rest, they say, is history. I started gardening for the first time and i didn't like it. It was probably because I was lazy :P But with good company and the fun of yanking out weeds (you can vent your anger out on the weeds) it wasn't so bad after that. And it is like you have the power to recreate part of nature, though in a really small way. Haha, remember EOP, we have got the POWER.

And then there were the actual activities themselves. Going to ubin to see the great Grant himself and witness what nature guiding was like. (and also to feed mosquitoes. sobsobsob) River-keeping...it's a good thing we no longer go to sungei api api. Bee stings, evil giant ants climbing up your legs, ducking under endless endless branches to pick up endless litter...ahhh, the horror. And of course, there was recycling. Those days last year when we thought we would die if we had to carry another stack of newspapers and weigh them. And we had can tab counting competitions :D Kudos to jasly for having the moving of newspapers spread out over many weeks this year. There was also the Recycling Outreach Programme which was like Envirofest. Little kids playing games. From experience, little kids seem to become more devious each year. So beware!

The camp last year was really enjoyable. But we were nicer than the batch of seniors last year ok! Last yr we had to squeeze out oranges without using our hands and drink creatively(disgustingly is a better word) concocted orange squash. This year there were the butt-to mouth interactions and the witnessing of a live R21 scene. We screamed when we saw the humping monkeys (well, the more guai and innocent people screamed. Others were not that innocent.)

Remember when we had to rush out posters proclaiming our love for ubin (despite its being mosquito kingdom) in the midst of CTs? The making of posters so stimulated our brains that peiyee and I ended up talking online throughout the rest of the night..till dawn. The BIG event for us that year was Energy Outreach Programme. Who would have thought we had to come onstage to sing the jingle, swaying our bodies as we did so. A lot of preparation went into the games and i remember how peiyee, yili, jasly and I were still working the night before at harmoc chalet. But the end result was the smooth running of this major event which we had to plan from scratch. I remember how I was pleasantly surprised when the audience clapped along with our jingle and not stare at us like we are ovesized kids dancing to what sounded like the barney song. Haha. I love the 07/08 batch of greenlinkers (it's platonic love btw.)

A word of warning...look out for the kids called rongrong and didi when you man the ubin greenhouse. They are incredibly naughty! And cute too. I must say the experiences at ubin have been really eye-opening, mosquito kingdom as it is :) Just think, which other cca gives you so much exposure...giving you the chance to show off "Oh, I survived climbing up onto the newspaper pile which took up the whole greenlink storeroom from floor to ceiling and managed to get down safely after that. I sang and danced to the barney jingle infront of over a hundred people, including a Member of Parliament. I went door-to-door for blocks and blocks, helping people to save electricity." Heh.

There was plenty of fun but of course the journey was fraught with difficulties. Nevertheless, we overcame them and emerged stronger than before (cliched right?). Like aloy said, greenlink is not about hugging trees. And it totally changed my perspective of it being a slack cca for appreciating the beauty of nature (yes, i used to think that) It is about appreciating the wonders of nature, but also playing a bigger role in linking people to the environment. hmm, more like showing them we are linked together in more ways than one thinks. Lol, I remember what huiyong wrote. If others criticise greenlink, say they have no link cos green links you and me! Greenlink...what an apt name.

I thought of this before, just after harmoc syf; a cca does not have to be just a routinely thing which you come for to do work...then move on to more work. You experience this warmth as you work together with your fellow cca members with a shared passion, going through everything with everyone else. Greenlink will always be a close-knit family for me :) (the nature guiding family is the closest-knit of all...)

I'm having the blues. I will really miss the hilarious meetings with meikwan around. But ah well, it's time to move on. The next greenlink journey will be another adventure.

Stepping Down

Hi, this is Aloysius - I just wanted to write a short message on the eve of handover. It has been slightly more than a year since the graduating exco took over; we have done loads of stuff, and I'm proud of them.

I have never imagined myself in Greenlink. Though I knew the existence of green clubs, which was one of the more prominent clubs in my sec school, I have never thought of joining one until I came to NJC. I'm sure many of us here have this same feeling. My initial plan was to take up a commission in NPCC, but unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you see), I missed the submission deadline. Much later I realised you could submit the form though the deadline was over, as long as you have teacher endorsement. But the world has turned green then...

Looking back, I have learnt and done loads. Nature guiding is extremely fun and enjoyable, so is gardening. I've always had an interest in nature through trekking and hiking, but never before I was so serious in it. Memorising plant names was easier once I had touched, smelt or seen it. I remembered every nature guiding experience. My first was guiding NTU Earthlink students (with Yili), second was for MINDS (Pei Yee), third was for breast cancer survivors (Mei Kwan), fourth was for children's orphanage, fifth for my Fellowship friends, and sixth for a software company. Of course there were still countless trips to Ubin to man the Greenhouse, my memory has failed me in this aspect.

Greenlink isn't just about hugging trees or getting stung by bees. There are some projects which require real organisational skills. I'm glad that I had this opportunity to exercise my skills and unleash my potential. Not many young men or women have such a chance. I can say 100percent now that Greenlink, besides sustaining my interest in nature, has further developed my skills in organising. The Energy Audit Project will always be memorable...the number of hours spent to paint a simple toy model! And my favourite Snakes & Ladders, which will be used for generations. Nice...

I had the honour of meeting my seniors, who gave me great comfort and ease when I first entered the club. They were extremely humourous, friendly and joyful, yet also serious when it comes to work. They helped me settle in the club easily. Of course, my fellow J2s too. It was a bit weird at first because there were only 2 guys, including me. But I got to know the rest pretty well later on, I could tell who's who and differentiate between them well. The exco worked quite good, held on by our passion. I apologise for any mistakes I have made and for any neglection of duty. There might be some conflicts, crying or debates here and there, but as a whole we are a capable team. I hope we remember our party times and learn from our lessons.

I wish the J1s best of luck. It will be the best of times and it will be the worst of times. But still have fun! Remember, always lead a balanced life of work and fun. I belong to one of my teachers' minimalists' school of thought - if there's nothing good to say, then don't say. But for you I break this rule. Bring Greenlink to greater heights, and build on the foundations which our seniors and us have laid carefully, painstakingly.

morning of chek jawa

Hi =)

to compensate for all of us missing out on all the treats at chek jawa, here's what i saw at on the morning of chek jawa. My dad and i were walking around the inter-tidal areas early that morning. chek jawa is also an inter-tidal zone. such areas allow us to see marine organisms that would be covered during high-tide, and we don't have to swim or scuba dive. but too much walking on such areas is very damaging since they are underwater most of the time, and aren't designed for foot traffic.

it's out! outopuses at the inter-tidal zone seem rather satisfied with just a little bit of water. it was hiding out the high tide in that little pot. and the water had receeded around the pot. then the poor thing got disturbed by us. =)
can you spot the pipefish? fella was happily hanging around in just 10cm of water.
thunder crab. again, i don't know the proper name. people say that if a thunder crab catches you in it's claws, it's so strong that you can;t force it to let go, but it will automatically let go if there is thunder. haha =)

can you see the semi-camouflaged shell? And then the same fella upside down. it's called gong-gong in dialect, english name no idea. hey, why has my font turned blue?

horseshoe crab shell and my pretty pink booties! just the shell though, not a live crab. if you look closely, you can see that the shell is broken.

sea star. i think it's cushion sea star, but i've got to go and get my chemistry done, do i don't have time to go check properly. haha =) opportunity cost of blogging is that my chem equilibrium is not being done.
the same fella upside down. you may have realised that i'm rather itchy fingered. you can see many little feet lining the 5 "legs". btw, you realise i've been saying sea star, and not star fish? sea star is a more correct name, since this fellas aren't fish at all. there's a lot more random data tt i'd like to share, but my chem equilibrium consolidation notes are starting to feel abandoned.
shall post more again sometime. oh, and i got 37 insect bites at chek jawa's boardwalk!!! haven't heal yet leh... haha =) shall stop whining over the internet and go do something more productive.

Status: ?

Details: Body parts found throughout NJC, recovered at grave risk for our detectives. 2 detectives missing in action, yet to report back HQ. The worst is feared - might have gotten lost in sprits' world. Still searching for them.

Murderer arrested - left her handphone number on body parts and exco application form at crime scene. Form stated she wanted to join exco for free cooking ingredients. Rejected. Wanted revenge, so killed and dismembered exco to make them into muthu curry. Accomplice on the run, $1m 'cowrie shells' offered as reward.

It was a journey into the unconscious and inner self. Our subconcious represses our greatest innermost desires, the savage forces which civlisation have tamed. Freed from the constraints of civilisation, the subconscious awakens and unleashes savagery and barbarianism. Example would be use of badminton as a weapon.

The light sticks represented the torch of civilisation, which bounds humans in our society to certain rules and conventions. As darkness engulfs them, they are placed in a trial - follow the light or be part of the darkness? Once the contraints of civilisation are removed, how far will one sacrifice his morality?

It is a test of humans' capacity to commit evil, as well as our resilience to withstand temptations -

Who is the second who walks always beside you, sits always beside you, runs always beside you? When I count, there are only you and I together.

But when I saw you on that night, the amazing race, the dinner...there was always another one gliding wrapt in a brown cloak, hooded. I do not know whether a man or a woman - but who is that sitting beside you?

Chek Jawa Trip!

During the boat ride, filming was done... Haha, look at the smiling faces of the 3 nature guiding ppl! and 2 girls filming each other... Lol

The rain continued, so we had to go to the Volunteers' Hub for shelter. The rain dint stop... So we stayed in the hub to watch some videos on Labrador Park and Chek Jawa, after which we went to Chek Jawa! The bumpy van ride was fun!

When we reached Chek Jawa after the amusing Jurassic Park ride, the group splits into 2 groups. Climbed the Jejawi Tower and saw this beautiful blue sea...

The guide says this blue sea occurence is due to the trapping of silt by the mangrove roots, and thus the sea appears blue instead of a murky colour.. The trip continued, but my cam went out of order.....

four lovely gals ran for greenlink in the sports heats today =)
it takes so much to run 400m in the sweltering heat, much less against runners from sports ccas and oac, who are in peak physical condition, train like siao and...ya, you know.
the four of them were not feeling well just before the run. stomachache, stressed about appearing inferior to the other ccas. haha. but the fact that greenlink took the big step to go out there and run against the other pro ccas just goes to show that we dare, and we have got plenty of courage =D and the greenlink team didn't too badly either. the four of them were fast ok=) pls dun feel bad about the run, u all deserve a big pat on the back, hahahah.

poor yili was wheezing non-stop after running. and meikwan complained about her painful burning butt. lol. the runners are great ppl. my only gripe is...haiz, yili ah, of all things, u wanted me to shout "toilet!" while u were running, then i had to shout in front of other ppl so diu lian...sobs.

Thank you for sweating it out by pushing trolleys of newspapers, climbing onto newspaper piles, stacking them, building foundations, drawing hexagon floor, stuffing the bins with papers, pasting posters around the school and the list goes on

I hope it was a memorable experience ( I'm sure it is! wahahahaha~)

and i think it's definitely a test of endurance ( e.g. when some inconsiderate people tie stacks of newspapers with those kind of plastic strings that cut your hand badly! TSK!)

5 Resolutions for Earth Week 2008

Here comes Earth Week 2008,and i've got 5 resolutions for myself.Here goes:

1) Stop buying drinks from the drink stalls which use disposable plastic cups

Rationale:Plastics are durable and degrade very slowly,while manufacturing them creates large quantities of chemical pollutants.Burning plastic can release toxic fumes.

(Hah.Watch me,i'm going to survive on plain water for the week.No bubble tea or watsoeva.)

2) Support Solaris in the recycling competition!!!!

Rationale:Greenlinkers who DID THEIR RECYCLING DUTY should noe why.

3) Survive on solar energy.

Rationale:This form of harnessing energy is said to be more enviromentally-friendly.

(Pls do not try this at home.If solar energy does not work,i'll try harnessing hydroelectric power from the flushing of toilets.)

4) Reduce my respiration rate.

Rationale:According to the respiration equation,Glucose + Oxygen => Carbon Dioxide + Water + Energy.Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas.

(If physical activity increases respiration rate and increases co2 emission,which clashes with my Earth Week 2008 resolution,wont it be reasonable to excuse myself from PE?)

5) Try not to fart.

Rationale:This intestinal gas contains methane from bacterial activity.Methane is 23 times more potent in trapping heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide.

(Like i said,i'll TRY not to,but if i do,i simply cant help it.Then again,even if i do,count yourself fortunate cuz u noe it's not one of the SBDs[Silent-But-Deadly ones].)

Well,other than the first 2 easier(but still challenging)-to-accomplish resolutions,looks like i've got a long way to go and yes,these are merely words.As the saying goes,'actions speak louder than words',i'll start executing them by Monday and why not you,fellow reader join me in the action as well?Don't forget,it only takes a single thought to move the world!

Update: Important Dates for Greenlink

Hihi greenlinkers!

It has been past mid-march and April is coming!!!! April, an important month for Greenlink and her members. There's the Sigma Day, EarthWeek and the Recycling Competition. 3 events in the same month! April shall be a busy month for all of us, so all of us must strive on and keep moving on k? Let's turn this busy month into an enriching and fulfilling one, and may all these be a memorable experience that will bond us even more. Recycled paper-making was really fun, seeing the red paper pulp and imagining them to be minced meat.... Lol haha.

Mm, there hasn't been a proper black and white notice given to you all on the important dates, so I shall post these dates on the blog to remind us of these events in case anyone has forgotten or have not even heard of them.

Busy April

1) April 9 (Wednesday) : Sigma Day for the secondary school students. It's a chance to promote our school, our science aspect of the school, as well as as our CCA so that they may be interested to join our school and even our CCA when they come over to study here next time. So treat it as an investment for the recruitment in the future... They will be coming over to our school and we gonna be mini teachers to these students after lessons from 2pm onwards... Keep this day free!

2) April 21 to 25th: Earth Week. The Sigma Day is an outreach to the secondary schools, while the annual Earthweek is an outreach to the NJ population within the school... To increase some environmental appreciation in the school as well as to promote our CCA. Earth Day is on 22nd April. This week can be foreseen to be an ultra busy full week for us, so be mentally prepared. Try to do the tutorials and any revision for this whole week beforehand, because we will probably be very occupied with Earthweek to be thinking hard for our homework.

3) There's the Recycling Competition in this week too. So other than be mentally prepared, we have to be physically prepared too, to do some manual carrying of recyclables....

May

May will the common test month for the j2s already, so the activities load will be less as well...
But for j1s, most probably you all will be busy preparing for the Energy Audit in July (or even earlier) this year, to promote Energy Conservation to the residents! So recruitment for volunteers for this project will be a pre-task. Advice: Start recruitment early! July will be too late...

June

June we will be busy again, but only up to the 1st week, if not then the most the most up till the 2nd week.

4) Sigma Junior Science Week in the first week, similar to the Sigma Day but this time the target audience are the primary school students. Similar aim to say hi to the primary school students so that they may come to NJ to study in the 6-year programme and perhaps even join us next time. But this time the Sigma Junior Science Week will be the juniors leading us.

5) June Camp when all memories between the Greenlink seniors and juniors will be consolidated to be deep-etched memory for years to come. Also for the election of the Greenlink Exco for 08/09. Seniors will be leaving after this to be in full force for A Levels... =(

July

Juniors will be on their own... For the Energy Audit, as well as the Green Audit...
So what's the green audit? It is to assess the green-ness of our school.... It's like a survey of many pages and each year we have to answer the questions to assess the school each year. What's its significance? At the school level, it may help the school win some green award; at a more personal level, we get to understand the green-ness of our own school... Some questions are on surveying the NJ population, so to help the juniors a little on this green audit, we have the compulsory audit aspect for the Earthweek so that when you all have to submit the audit later in the year, you all will not be so flustered to gather the many answers as well as manage your studies.....

And months to come..... Juniors will have to jiayou!

Oops, unconsciously I have already typed the schedule of events up till June..... as updated from today... As for what else that may pop up or be changed in between, will have to see furthur updates. For now, let's jiayou jiayou for April together!

We are all in this together, so let's show support for one another! Less active members please do show your support as well.

there.. but as i upload these photos i think we all realise, those of us who were present at these events, that the photographs are truly inadequate to express the various emotions and experiences of what they captured. A photo, however well taken, is only momentary. It cannot show the all the things that happened that made greenlink uniquely what it was in our time. the photo of the pretty recycled paper cannot show the headache we felt in researching the methods, the desperation we felt when the darn things will NOT dry and the hilarity we experienced playing with those paper mud pies. the photos of the mural cannot show the hardwork we put in every single day of the march holidays at ubin, cannot show the ridiculous things we saw in those days, the pride we feel when we behold the final green house. likewise, the june camp photos cannot relate the sense of camaraderie we felt, the small compact unity of the club, the late night games and the horrors *snickers* at the night walk. (J1s, pls ask ur seniors what they did to the J3s in the night walk). anyways.. enough ramblings on my part.

Introduction

There are many environmentally proactive people in Singapore who have made contributions to the environment, each in their own ways. Coming from all sectors of the community- school teachers, students, youth and volunteers in non-government, private, people as well as public sector organizations 'these individuals have sacrificed their personal time and effort to protect, promote and enhance our Clean & Green environment.

Through the collective efforts of these proactive individuals in taking ownership over the environment, everyone gets to benefit from the outcome of a clean and green environment. As such, the National Environment Agency has initiated the EcoFriend Award to recognise their efforts and achievements, as well as encourage them to continue and expand their efforts in caring for the environment. We look forward to welcoming more individuals on board the EcoFriend family.

Scope

All efforts made by an individual in protecting, promoting and enhancing Singapore's Clean & Green environment over the past two to five years will be taken into account in the selection of recipients for the award.

Eligibility

The EcoFriend Award is open to all individuals residing in Singapore.
EcoFriend Award Categories
There are five (5) EcoFriend Award categories. Individuals may be nominated in only ONE of the following categories:
1. Private sector individuals
2. Public Sector individuals

hoho. today is a crazy day...

meikwan and i were waiting in e sanctuary for chocolate making to start...den jiahui sms say she at oasis v sian nth to do..den mk say she can go jump into e leaf bin at the oasis.

wahahaha.

and tt's how the legend of the GREENLINK GODDESS began. jiahui veri 伟大，sacrificed herself by mixing herself with the leaf compost...den she recycle herself n decompose so tt her nutrients can be used for the good of the plants. hehehe hahaha. 9th july is a significant day, every year on this day, you can go see the greenlink goddess rise out of the leaf litter bin! wow! then this goddess veri lihai, she is goddess of somersault. cos in the leaf bin she keeps spinning around and around..and so her kungfu oso veri lihai =D gosh, what a self-sacrificial goddess. and after her noble act today, we discovered all the trees were growing extremely well =D den hor this goddess realli is goddess lor, she decompose liao still can be in one whole piece =D we discussed how to worship her..must give pocky stick offerings, a good substitute for joss sticks cos goddess likes to eat pocky =) den we build her a shrine out of recycled material-pocky stick boxes.

What do you think of the new blogskin? It's hard to find a skin on nature that looks nice. I still prefer another skin, but that one has some problems. Once I get it fixed, I'll change it back ok! Oh yeah, the person who set up the tag board, can you add in the code for the tagbox? I don't have the account.

Why Greenlink?

“DON'T mind me saying, Greenlink is a sissy CCA.” Coming from a friend, it does hurt; but she was just a casual friend, so I treated her jab at my masculinity like a one night stand. Yet there was collateral damage to Greenlink’s reputation. It was a slap on our club activities, it was a slap on our members’ efforts, and it was a slap on our ideals and goals. In other words, Greenlink in her opinion lacked the qualities associated with the traditional male role, such as courage, strength, determination etc. Since it was not all these, then it must be the very opposite – the ‘yin’, epitomising passiveness, darkness, negativity, descend… Yet it is not, because Greenlink is a fast-flowing river, which we sail on our yatch for undiscovered waters.

The international green movement was thought to be born from the German Green Party in the 1980s, which contested elections based on the principles of environmentalism, sustainability, social justice, non-violence and democracy. Organisations such as Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth were formed to pressurise governments to take actions against ‘nature abuse’. Here, in sunny Singapore, the government was green from the start because it needed American greenbacks (and Japanese yen) for us to survive. We have the Nature Society of Singapore (NSS), Green Volunteers’ Network (GVN) and the Singapore Environment Council (SEC), just to name a few, which aim to promote ‘green’ awareness among Singaporeans and compel them to take action. And, of course, we have NJC Greenlink, sharing the same purposes, albeit acting on a smaller scale.

Club activities such as nature guiding, recycling and gardening help to promote green consciousness among students and the larger community; and sometimes involve saving the Earth directly. The most recent public event was the Energy Audit Project in Sembawang, where we conveyed the message of energy efficiency to more than 1000 residents. The conclusion to this project was a carnival comprising of games and exhibits which attracted more than 600 residents, further extending our outreach project. Of course, we also did gardening in our spice garden, recycling of can tabs and newspapers, and nature guiding in Pulau Ubin. However, I can hear the voice of my secondary school history teacher probing forcefully, “So what?”

“To ensure they are not ignorant of the environment.”

“So?”

“Then that they will take care of it.”

“So?”

“They will be taking ownership and responsibility of the environment.”

“So?”

“They will have a sense of belonging to the environment.”

“So?”

“They will work together.”

Precisely, once people work together, be it in terms of UN environmental conferences, carbon credit market; national laws and economic policies; and down to the most micro level of reusing plastic bags, saving the Earth will be a possibility. The world is so inter-connected that it is too difficult to dismiss the happenings of a distant place as having no impact on you. We are well-aware of that, hence our activities are not always restricted to school – they can be in Pulau Ubin, Sembawang, Ang Mo Kio and of course, overseas, for our seniors. In fact it is impossible for our activities to be held in school only, since community service is a major part of our programme. We are young students who through our activities seek to ignite passion in our community for Mother Earth. Our club activities are centred on this basic premise of igniting passion among students and adults, to get them thinking and take tiny actions which go a long way in helping nature. During a nature guiding session in Palau Ubin, some of the adults were clearly impressed with my knowledge despite being a young student. I hoped I inspired them, in the way some of the older and experienced ones inspired me with their vast knowledge. I could never have imagined myself as a nature guide, and Greenlink provided me with this unique opportunity.

At more pragmatic levels, Greenlink is an avenue of accumulating CIP hours. Fortunately, this community service is not your run-of-the-mill-type. River-keeping and HDB residential door-to-door visits to educate the public on energy conservation are meant to help both nature and people. Such grassroots interactions, literally, are hardly available to other students. At more pragmatic levels also mean that unlike other CCAs, funds are limited. But thankfully, collaborations with partners like Northwest CDC and GVN’s Grant Pereira give us exposure which money is unable to buy. The learning experiences are immense and extremely valuable. The Energy Audit Carnival in December 2007 was a hands-on lesson in real-life business skills. Accounting (the Art Friend receipts etc), human resources (who must do what), marketing (the games must be attractive), operations (how to manage the residents), procurement (where to buy the materials), research and development (how to build a model from pieces of wood), information technology (design the snakes-and-ladders mat), administration (paperwork for some) and public relations (some residents are not friendly). I wonder if any other CCA offers such all-rounded opportunities.

On a simpler level, Greenlink’s small number of membership inevitably leads to closer interaction among members than a large CCA could have allowed. Understandably, this small membership is also perhaps proof of its unpopularity. Yet strength can be drawn from a united and small band of brothers (or girls). I have always believed that quality is better than quantity and this holds true for past, present and maybe future. Small is indeed beautiful, not just for outsiders, but undoubtedly true for those within the club. Humour is another characteristic too; according to biology, within a small genetic pool, humour has a higher chance of occurrence because there is less variety of genes to pass down. Humour in literature can be ironic humour, grotesque humour, satirical humour and several others; but here it is uniquely known as green humour.

I have never regretted joining Greenlink. The question is, will I regret not joining Greenlink? I will not regret not joining Greenlink because I couldn’t have known the many opportunities ahead of me then. Would I have joined if I had heard it was a ‘sissy CCA’? I do not know. One thing is for sure, I’ve met great friends. They are warm-hearted, enterprising, adventurous, loyal, tenacious and honourable – nothing like ‘sissy’. They are the epitome of Nature's personality. They have influenced me to a large extent through their personal values. I believe I have also influenced them to a large extent. I was surprised and pleased to see Shrek on the club website giving Christmas greetings. My lasting legacy is definitely Shrek and the phrase ‘I love green’, which have entered the collective memory of past and present members. I sometimes wonder how I did it.

I have finally sailed down the river, right into its heart. It was only when I did gardening that I saw the whole world from the perspective of a plant. “My green thumb came only as a result of the mistakes I made while learning to see things from the plant’s point of view.” – Succinctly expressed by a fellow gardener. I hope we can link you and me with Green, in one single heart of greenness, and continue to plant a new seed of warmth in the world.

i bring wonderful news. it's about time we get down to serious business. no more slacking. let's be very enthu and cheery about this. yay! =(

TO DO

-GREEN AUDIT; is the rubbish smelly? count the plants. count the toilets. count the paper. count the rubbish.

-Clean up the greenlink room, do a stock check, categorise and label all the items.-

-Turn the greenlink room into a cosy room to chill out in or something...if possible. so people can relax in the room, not just cockroaches.

this means we must all come on a day to do the glam work!

-CCA carnival coming up, on that day we will all put on some nice body decoration. whee~ and we have to make souvenirs...

yup, notice board will be updated.

our president wants us to have a biannual greenlink newsletter.

last but not least, the current greenlink tagline is LINKING YOU WITH THE GREEN. hmmm...

this is a serious post, i hope.
